Dallas Transfer Collaborative:

Transforming Student Transfer in Higher Ed

Background

In Texas, it takes a transfer student more than two additional years to earn a bachelor’s degree than it does a “start and stay” student – on average, a difference of more than four semesters. With support from the Commit Partnership, NVision is working with a collaborative group of North Texas institutions - including Dallas College, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas Woman’s University and University of North Texas at Dallas – on innovative approaches to address the barriers that impede student transfer rates and success.

Approach

NVision has long worked with North Texas higher ed partners on student transfer issues, focusing primarily on the needs of students potentially transfering from a 2-year college to 4-year university.

With this new program, the collaborative is focused on two innovative projects designed to make the transfer process less complex and provide 2-year to 4-year educational pathways that are clearer and more aligned.  First, the partners are developing an online transfer portal, a “one stop shop” for students with all the information that they need about the transfer process in one spot, including full visibility into potential study pathways through Dallas College, and the ability to see how and where credits can be applied within each of the partners’ bachelor’s programs.  Concurrently, the collaborative is also developing a series of streamlined academic pathways between Dallas College and the university partners, including alignment on transfer degree requirements.
